My 6 best tips for effortless style

Upfront, I'm usually too lazy to put forth much effort into my style. The pandemic gave me a different outlook, and now I try more. So, I thought I'd share my best tips for effortless style that work for me! So, I'm still lazy – that will never change. But after wearing onesies all the time for a couple of years, I've found a great balance between being comfy, looking put together, and not spending much time on it!

Here are my best tips for effortless style

  1. Know your body type and what works for it

This is definitely the most important one of my tips. The fit of your outfit is always key to looking and feeling your best. You'll never feel good if something doesn't sit right on you, or you've highlighted an area that isn't your favourite, or your outfit is too tight.

  1. Age ain't nothing but a number

I'm personally tired of the thought that someone is too old or too young to wear something. Some of the sayings I'm thinking of include:

"She dresses old for her age."

"Why is that person wearing tight jeans at their age?"

"Minis are just for teens or people in their 20s."

I personally was too self-conscious about my skinny legs in my teens and 20s to wear minis. I don't care anymore and will wear them until I no longer can! If you love something and it makes you feel good, wear it!

  1. Get some inspo!

You probably already do this, but checking out Instagram and Pinterest can give you some great ideas. My style icon looks are all over the place. I've written about some of them, but I seem to be veering into a Stevie Nicks / Donna Summer 70s mashup in the last couple of months!

  1. Get out of your comfort zone once in a while

I say this for all parts of your life – get out of your comfort zone! Check out colours you never wear or a style that you didn't think worked for you. If it flatters your complexion or body type – do it! And if it doesn't, and you want to wear it anyway, I still say do it! Trying something new is usually never a bad thing.

  1. It's better to be overdressed than underdressed

I subscribe to this tip wholeheartedly. I did it before covid, but it just feels more right after wearing pjs and onesies for a year and a half. If you're unsure of the dress code for a meeting, date or event, it's better to look too done up than not at all. If you want to make sure you're not totally overdressed, bring a casual light jacket or shawl to cover up in case you are.

  1. Wear a statement piece

Give them something to talk about! Try an awesome pair of shoes or boots, statement jewellery or item of clothing that makes people say wow! It's not something you need to do every day - well, I try, but I am over the top! Accessories go far any day if you want to spruce up an outfit without making a full-on statement.

Bonus tip: Plan ahead

Planning your weekly outfits is as effective as preparing weekly meals. Take Sunday to pull your outfits together for the week. It can save so much time every day. I included this one because my mom always did it, and it worked for her. I'm far too lazy, so I can't say I've tried it, which is why it's a bonus tip. But, there are many times I think I could save so much time if I did this! If you watched me scramble to pull together an outfit 10 minutes before having to leave, you would ask why I'm not doing it!
